Uptime is easy to take for granted until the day it fails. Monitoring turns it from an assumption into something you can measure and improve.

## What an uptime percentage allows

A percentage sounds small, but over a month or a year it adds up. Here is what each common target allows, using 30-day months and 365-day years.
UptimePer dayPer 30 daysPer year
99.00%14.4min7.2h3.65d
99.90%1.4min43.2min8.76h
99.95%43.2s21.6min4.38h
99.99%8.6s4.3min52.6min

Each extra nine cuts the allowed downtime by a factor of ten. It also raises the effort and cost of reaching it, so choose a target that matches what your business needs.

## Why customers notice first without monitoring

Without monitoring, the first alert is a customer message, a failed payment or a social post. By then the incident is already public, and you have lost time you could have spent fixing it.

## What monitoring gives you
- Faster detection. Know within minutes, not when someone complains.
- Evidence. A record of incidents and response times helps you meet commitments and review what happened.
- Context. Response times, resource usage and recent changes help you find the cause.
- Trust. A status page shows customers you are on top of it.

## Avoiding alert fatigue

Monitoring only helps if people respond. Check from several locations to avoid reacting to a regional hiccup, set sensible response-time thresholds, and route alerts to the right channel. An alert that is ignored is worse than none.

## Getting started
- Add your home page and your most important endpoint.
- Add SSL and domain expiry reminders.
- Connect one alert channel your team reads.
- Publish a status page.
- Review incidents monthly and adjust.

Note. Uptime is measured from the outside. Percentages depend on check frequency and locations, so compare like with like.
